Oceankind Communications Guidance

Introduction

Oceankind’s mission is to improve the health of global ocean ecosystems while supporting the livelihoods of people who rely on them. We seek to advance the policy, science, and technology necessary to reverse the growing threats facing our oceans.

Of the many issues affecting the marine environment today, we believe that climate change, overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution are among the most significant. In pursuing these programs, Oceankind employs two basic approaches. First, our standard grantmaking approach centers on advancing critical policies. Second, our Labs Initiative seeks to accelerate the development of promising conservation technologies.

Use of Oceankind Name in Public-Facing Materials

To honor the Advisors’ wish for anonymous grants, we require that funding recipients do not disclose the grant amount, the names of the Advisors, or the name of the Account in any public-facing materials. Unless required by law, refrain from making verbal, print, electronic, or social media announcements regarding your grant, and do not use the names of the Advisors or the Account in any associated spoken or written materials.

Managing Media

Oceankind always wants the focus of its efforts to be on our grantees rather than on us. We need to provide prior approval if additional details about our grants are to be shared.

We also encourage you to keep Oceankind informed of any emerging situations that could generate public or media scrutiny. Open and timely communication helps ensure thoughtful, coordinated responses and supports the shared goal of maintaining trust and credibility with stakeholders.

Should you receive specific questions about Oceankind, please direct their inquiries to our info@oceankind.org email address. If you engage in any media interviews, please do not comment or speculate on the management team or the funders of Oceankind.

If you have any additional questions about Oceankind and our media strategy, please contact Susan Butenhoff at susanbutenhoff@gmail.com, (415) 640-1230.
